NEXT USEFUL TOOL

Dimensional Weight Calculator

Calculate volumetric shipping weight with a visible, editable divisor and compare it with actual package weight.

Open calculator

How it works

Start with two different measurements: the mass of the packed cargo and the weight equivalent of its outer volume. The comparison chooses the larger value and tells you which input is controlling the result.

For identical cartons, enter actual weight per carton and the full carton count. The tool multiplies both actual and dimensional weight by quantity. Do not enter shipment total weight in a field labelled weight per box.

If dimensional weight controls, reducing unnecessary outer volume can lower the planning value. If actual weight controls, a smaller box alone may not change it. Packaging must still protect the contents adequately.

Formula

Planning chargeable weight = max(actual total weight, dimensional total weight)

Inputs are normalized before calculation. Results are rounded for display.

Worked example

48 cartons at 12 kg each have an actual total weight of 576 kg. At 60 × 40 × 35 cm and divisor 6000, dimensional total weight is 672 kg. The larger value is 672 kg, so dimensional weight controls this planning comparison.

Limitations and assumptions

  • This is a planning calculation, not a freight quote or guaranteed billed weight.
  • Some services compare or round individual packages before adding them. Mixed cargo may require package-by-package treatment.
  • Rates, minimum charges, oversize charges and carrier-specific rounding are excluded.

Read the calculation disclaimer before relying on an estimate for a shipment.

Frequently asked questions

Is chargeable weight the same as actual weight?

Only when actual weight is at least as large as dimensional weight under the selected rule. Otherwise the dimensional value controls this comparison.

Why is my carrier’s billed figure different?

Check the divisor, measured outer dimensions, per-package rounding, minimums and service terms. This tool applies the displayed mathematical comparison without a carrier tariff.

Can this estimate my shipping price?

No. A price also needs a service, route, rate, surcharges and commercial terms. Use the result as an input when discussing a shipment with your provider.
