How it works

Use this ratio to compare packaging or loading scenarios on a consistent basis. Available volume is the space being evaluated, while used volume is the space you choose to count as occupied.

For product-to-carton efficiency, compare product volume with the carton’s usable internal volume. For carton-to-container efficiency, compare carton outer volumes with the usable container envelope. Label your inputs consistently before comparing results.

Used volume above available volume is rejected by default. The optional over-capacity comparison can deliberately show a planning excess. A value above 100% describes a shortfall in available space, not a physically successful load.

Formula

Utilization (%) = used volume ÷ available volume × 100; remaining volume = available − used

Inputs are normalized before calculation. Results are rounded for display.

Worked example

If cartons occupy 7.5 m³ within an available 10 m³ envelope, utilization is 75%, unused space is 25% and remaining volume is 2.5 m³. The arithmetic alone does not show whether a specific extra carton fits.

Limitations and assumptions

  • High utilization does not establish product protection, safe load distribution or physical fit.
  • A volume ratio does not account for the shape or location of empty spaces.
  • Comparisons are meaningful only when used and available volume follow the same measurement basis.

Frequently asked questions

Is 100% utilization always the goal?

No. Packaging may need protection, ventilation, access or securing space. The appropriate amount of unused space depends on the product and transport conditions.

Why can I not enter used volume above capacity by default?

That would describe more space than is available. Enable the explicit over-capacity comparison only when you want to quantify that shortfall.

Does 20% unused volume mean I can add 20% more cartons?

Not necessarily. Residual spaces can be too narrow or inaccessible. A geometric fit calculation and practical loading review are needed.
